Tonight I feel alone...
I can feel the earth breathing below me. The soft whoosh of her heart beat vibrates hollowly in my bones. Every few seconds I let a handful of sand slip through my parted fingers like so many missed opportunities to lie amongst the billion other grains of sand blanketing the beach. Waves lap hungrily at them, swirling them away into the dark abyss only to redeposit them changed, wiped clean, and blissfully anonymous. I have never felt lonelier than at this moment. The blackness of the night is near suffocating. A thousand starry eyes stare down at me, but there is a chill in their light as they are but the echoes of burnt corpses. An endless mass of water spreads before me, an infinity of pitch. So much darkness can suck the warmth from even the tropical air. A light breeze blows the collar of my shirt, baring my shoulders and taunting me with the absence of a lovers touch.
I breathe with the waves, synchronizing my body to the turning of the earth. I breath in, the waves break. I breath out, the waves recede. In and out. Ebb and flow. The world turns.
