Animal Magnetism
I had an amazing time shadowing the keepers these last two days. I got to know Terry and Heather much better, as well as a whole host of other keepers who I had met and many who I hadn't. One of the coolest things is that suddenly big wigs who have ignored me forever on education staff were talking to me and joking with me and even remembered my name the next day! Woohoo. I had so much fun. My muscles are aching, especially my thighs. I definitely think I could enjoy having it as a career. Especially if I could implement research and training. It was cool to be inside all the exhibits I have looked at so many times. And to know that those people were looking in at what they thought was a genuine zoo keeper complete with stylish rubber boots. =)
I am now planning on applying for the animal behavior internship at Toledo Zoo for this summer as an alternative to the animal care internship at Cleveland. It is unpaid but they offer housing and it would be a lot more beneficial training for me. After all, I already know how to clean cages... It's training and behavior I have a burning passion to learn more about. I'll be dropping off my resume on Monday when I am there to shadow. Wish me luck!
