Amazing
I returned to work just in time to be reminded of why I love my job so much. Aside from being reunited with the animals I have missed and realizing how soothing it is to work with them, I got to witness a beautiful miracle. Just as lunch started, a few volunteers ran through the lunch room on their way out the door. I managed to catch them and ask what was happening. The giraffe was delivering her baby! When we got to the exhibit window overlooking their winter quarters, we could see two little hooves hanging from the mother's behind. Two hours later (yes my supervisors ok'ed watching so long as we caught up the work later) and the baby finally plopped the 6 feet to the ground. It was breath taking. How many people will ever get the chance to watch a giraffe be born? Sure my job is hard work, sure not all my co workers or bosses are the easiest people to work with, sure training and protocols are often frustrating... But the animals make it worth it. The shine in the eye of the visitors who care about the animals as well make it worth it. The fact that the field is ever so slowly moving more and more towards making sure the animals are best taken care of, as well as focusing on conservation and research for the entire world. It is a wonderful field to be a part of and I love it.
